Winsome Brown

Theatre

A hit one-woman show from New York. The epic story of a mother's life. Obie Award winner Winsome Brown channels her wickedly funny Irish mother, her Alaskan frontiersman father, and her engaging family. With deft humour and a light touch, she reveals Mary's struggles with alcoholism, her war-stories of a 45-year marriage with children, the sad grace of her death. Winsome Brown is ‘enchanting’ (TimeOut) ‘gloriously gifted ... chameleonic’ (Variety), ‘outstanding’ (NY Review of Books). André Gregory calls the show "Revelatory." A deeply touching story of family, thrilling and generous in love, honesty, and humour. REVIEWS: André Gregory calls the play "Revelatory." The New York Times calls it "Lovely," "affecting," "honest," "touching," and says "Such frank and straightforward storytelling is poignant." (A link to the review is below) Time Out NY calls it "powerful." They say Winsome Brown is "a versatile performer" and the character Mary Brown is "always a hoot." They conclude by saying: "... In the final, powerful 15 minutes ... Mary's family gathers by her hospital bed to say goodbye. As she lays dying, she emerges as a full-fledged woman whose simple life touched so many. In those moments, This Is Mary Brown blossoms into a fitting tribute to the title mom, and all the flawed mothers who still toil away uncelebrated." http://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/15/theater/review-in-this-is-mary-brown-mom-has-troubles-but-is-quite-a-character.html?_r=0
