Augustine's, Fringe Venue 152, is located in Augustine United Church on George IVth Bridge (H4 page 15 of the Edinburgh A-Z - see also the map on the location page).
The building is a working church, see www.augustine.org.uk for more information about the church itself, but during the Festival it is adapted to provide two performance spaces.
The public area of the building is on two levels. On the entrance level is a large reception area, which houses the Box Office and Coffee Bar, and The Sanctuary, which provides a 110 seater space suitable for all types of theatre. There are public toilets on this level, and our festival-time offices are also on this level, off the reception area.
On the lower level is a studio space -- The Studio -- seating approximately 105. This level also houses offices used by year-round tenants of the building, the kitchen, and performer toilet facilities.
Below this, on the sub-basement level, is storage space used by the church and Paradise Green Promotions throughout the year, as well as further toilets and dressing room facilities. This level has separate street-level access from Merchant Street (yes - we have two street level entrances, two floors apart!).
There is reasonable access to both performance spaces for loading sets, etc., but storage is limited. In the past we have been able to store all the props/set on the premises but it does rely on companies being reasonable in their requests. All the props/items of set for The Studio will need to be taken either up or down one level. The rear door, accessible from Merchant Street, can be used for loading/unloading, but this street has a single yellow line and can be busy at times. Storage for The Studio is in the wing rooms. All of the storage available for companies using The Sanctuary is on the balcony level of the church, which means that props and set will additionally need to be carried up and down stairs on a daily basis.
Both performance spaces are reasonably accessible: there is a ramp available to enter the building from the bridge level and from there into The Sanctuary (including the wings and most of the stage) is level access. There is a wheelchair lift to the lower level, leading into The Studio. This comes out onto a raised part of the seating rake but there is a ramp in the backstage area down to the dressing rooms and The Studio's stage left wing. However, the stage in the Studio is raised, requiring a large step up.
